What your looking at here is a fancy high performance aluminum dirt bike frame with a big crack in it. What started as a normal tear down led us to some serious damage on this particular bike. Whether your cleaning your machine or doing scheduled maintenance try to remember to look closely at the vehicle even with a shop or flash light and do a thorough inspection looking for any abnormal wear and damage. If your machine has some hours on it always make sure to keep up with the items on the periodic maintenance chart and don’t forget to look the entire vehicle over for missing fasteners and abnormal wear, the sooner you can find the damage the less likely it is to get worse or even cause an accident.
Another commonly over looked area on chain driven vehicles is the chain guide on the swingarm, if the chain wears through the guide it will eat into the swing arm damaging the chain and even worse destroying the swingarm like the one in the photo above. This bikes swingarm could have been saved if the guide was replaced with the last set of chain and sprockets, a new chain guide is only 40 dollars compared to around 600 for the swingarm. Save yourself some time and money carefully looking over your machine and keeping up with your periodic maintenace. Cyclepedia has all the information you need to keep riding.
